4/10/2023 - Week Five - It's not easy being green!

Happy Easter everybody!

I hope you have had an incredible week! Alabama has graced us with some interesting weather this week. Early in the week it was starting to feel a little warm 😬 I was getting a little nervous about how the summer is going to go, it's only gonna get hotter and more humid so if I don't send an email one of these weeks just assume that I melted. Later in the week it was kinda chilly, which is so silly because it's like 50 degrees but the humidity makes a difference. It's been kinda rainy too which is fun.

Also this week was my one month as a missionary! Kinda crazy!

For service this week we got to help a family move out of their house and I got to meet some more ward members who were there so that was fun!

There are a lot of cool old houses here that are Colonial style, they have the big front porch, columns, brick, etc. It's really incredible, I think they're so gorgeous.

This week Sister Hyde and I have been struggling with having our conversations with people go on too long. It's good to have long talks with people, but often they are just about life things and not about sharing the gospel. Where I'm from it seems like the missionaries hold people hostage when they talk to them, but here in the south I feel like I'm the one being held hostage. My favorite phrase is "aw you don't wanna hear me talk all day" and then they keep talking. But we do our best to throw some principles of the gospel in!

Along with that we have been teaching a man named John. We teach him over zoom, not because he doesn't live close but because he creeps us out a little bit. He's interesting because sometimes we teach him things and I feel like he doesn't understand and then he will say something profound and we're like oh he gets it and then he starts talking about how Nephi was an alien 🤷‍♀️  he also asked us why we were in the Chevy and we were like how did you know we drive a Chevy? And he said lucky guess. So that was spooky, but it's funny.

Yesterday was Easter Sunday! What a special day to be a missionary. I feel like I have learned so much already and my testimony has grown so much just from being here which made this Easter extra special. In sacrament meeting yesterday Sister Hyde was asked to speak and gave a great talk! As our bishop was conducting the meeting he said "Sister Hyde will be our first speaker and then we've asked Sister Hansen to bear her testimony" one of his counselors looked over at me and smiled because they did not ask me to bear my testimony! But I did it anyway and it was good. I also got to call and talk to the family yesterday and it was so awesome!

Spiritual thought:
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is the most central piece of the gospel. And even though I still don't fully understand it, I have come to know so much more of it as I've studied it this week and on my mission in general. I hope you all get the chance to study it and remember what our Savior did for us. Think of all the things you've had to suffer in your life and remember that there is one who understands so fully and completely everything you have gone through and will go through. He is always there for us!

❤️ Sister Hansen

Shoutout to my momma for sending me an Easter/Greenie package!

Also pro tip: if you're out of space to park in the driveway or out front, just park on the lawn!
